I first became aware of Susan's singing workshops on a night out where Susan was actually performing. The compare on the night had mentioned where and when they were on and I immediately thought it would be something that would interest me. Not only that but straight away Susan's voice was the best advertisement for her workshops. I went along not sure what to expect but Susan is a very friendly, personable teacher who inspires confidence and encourages everyone to find their own voice. Her workshops are fun, friendly and cover everything from vocal warm ups, vocal exercises, breathing techniques to how to take a song, break it down and learn it including phrasing, pitch and harmonies. All the songs we learn are sung acapella so it's purely based on using your voice and it's open to anyone who loves to sing.

I love Susan's classes, I've been going for a year. I've tried various singing groups and classes in the last few years. I find singing a great antidote to a busy job. Susan's classes have developed my confidence and my repertoire more than anything else I've tried. Susan concentrates a lot on warm-ups and vocal exercises and I feel this has helped develop my voice. Also, singing with the group and having some opportunities for performing as a group has encouraged me in singing in other situations. Susan is very open to everyone's ideas.

The key word in relation to Susan Tomelty's singing workshops is fun. The relaxed atmosphere helps to overcome the initial nerves of starting to sing. Starting to sing can be a bit daunting but I found Susan's approach very useful. First there is a good vocal warm up. Something I didn't know is the voice like any musical instrument needs to be tuned up before use. Even this in itself was a revelation to me. After this it's straight into singing. Some songs are straight forward and others a bit challenging. They vary in range from Beatles to gospel to blues. It's a mixed bag which is another fun aspect to the workshop. Susan invites ideas from the group which is great. To my mind the most attractive aspect of the workshop is that it gets you singing in a totally non judgmental environment. Susan makes it a positive experience so there are no eyes raised to heaven when wrong notes are sung. She laughs that wonderful laugh of hers helps you in the nicest way. Do one of Susan's workshops. Liberate yourself.
